Threnody

I wrote a song for my true love
a melody of endless joy
it hangs around me in the air
and follows me as but a sigh

I saw my love in darkened halls
we travelled swiftly through the night
she murmured softly of the past
and turned her gaze away from mine

and floating softly on the air
amidst the strife and pain and woe
I sang to her my melody
and with it begged her not to go

a song of gladness never lasts
its triumph slowly dies away
the words of love which felt so true
ring hollow in the light of day

and now my song cries of despair
anguished, sad and deathly soft
it slowly pines for my true love
a threnody for all we’ve lost
