Salt

spilling salt or spilling love
was it all bad luck for us?
poured away or swallowed up
I never had that choice

throw the salt into my eye
it’s the devil you’re supposed to blind
what did you expect to find
wearing that disguise?

don’t say it’s not my fault
don’t say we’re not in love
just go and fetch your salt
we’ve got wounds to rub

did you wish for liberty
a hundred miles away from me?
just throw it back into the sea
pretend it’s not a game

sleepless nights and restless days
I close my eyes to see your face
and as I wash the salt away
it stings like your disdain

don’t say it’s not my fault
don’t say we’re not in love
just go and fetch your salt
we’ve got wounds to rub

salt won’t take the pain away
salt won’t slake my thirst
but I still drink it anyway
unless you drink it first

they say you make your own bad luck
I spilt the salt and spilt my guts
so rub it deep into the cuts
to agitate my flesh

tell me what I need to buy
the salt becomes your alibi
but don’t forget to keep it dry
in a painted dish

don’t say it’s not my fault
don’t say we’re not in love
just go and fetch your salt
we’ve got wounds to rub

salt won’t take the pain away
salt won’t slake my thirst
but I still drink it anyway
unless you drink it first

don’t say it’s not my fault
don’t say we’re not in love
just go and fetch your salt
we’ve got wounds to rub
